The Crafter’s Way 214–Felt Pincushions

This week’s column is the last in the series ‘Reusing Plastic Water Bottles’. We will be using the lids for this project.

You will also need: felt, scissors, thread, needle and a small amount of stuffing.

Step 1: Using the plastic lid trace 2 circles onto felt.

Step 2: Thread needle and decorate 1 circle with stitching. Cut both circles out.

Step 3: Mark one edge of the bottle cap. Line the mark up against the vertical edge of the felt. Roll the bottle cap along the horizontal edge of the felt until you have completed one rotation. Mark felt at this point.

Step 4: Measure along vertical edge no more than 3 times the height of the bottle cap. Mark.

Step 5: Cut out rectangle of felt. Thread needle and stitch a decorative pattern.

Step 6: Place unstitched circle of felt onto the flat surface of the lid. Begin stitching decorated rectangle to circle. This can be a little fiddly at first but it becomes easier after a couple of stitches. When you reach the starting point continue stitching the seam of the rectangle.

Step 7: You should now have a cylinder. Pushing stuffing into cylinder ensuring it is packed firmly into lid. Attach decorated circle to enclose cylinder.

You can also use plastic jar lids to make larger pincushions.
